Sir Gilbert Levine conducts a performance of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, recorded in Cologne Cathedral during the 2005 World Youth Day celebrations in Germany. This was the first time that Missa Solemnis, Beethoven’s monumental spiritual masterpiece, had ever been performed in Cologne Cathedral, Germany’s most famous church and home cathedral of Beethoven, who was a native of Bonn, just down the river Rhine from Cologne. The performance features soloists Bozena Harasimowicz, Monica Groop, Jerry Hadley, and Franz-Josef Selig, with the London Philharmonic Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
