General Manager — Tom Rieland
Thomas Rieland has served as General Manager of WOSU Public Media since November, 2002. Rieland has 30 years of broadcast producing and management experience, beginning his career as a news reporter/anchor with commercial stations in Wisconsin, Florida, and Tennessee. He supervised the broadcast center at the University of Mississippi while receiving a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Ole Miss. Prior to coming to Columbus, Rieland served for 13 years as Director of the Center for Public Television and Radio at the University of Alabama, where he also taught in the Telecommunications and Film department.
Rieland is an Emmy, Cine Golden Eagle, and New York Festival award winning producer of documentaries. His work has appeared nationally on PBS, C-Span, ESPN, CNN, and other networks.
Rieland has served as President of the Ohio Educational Television Stations and of the Ohio Public Telecommunications Alliance. He serves on several local boards including the Jefferson Center Academy of Leadership & Governance and the Columbus Metropolitan Club. Nationally, he serves on the board of the National Educational Telecommunications Association and committees related to public broadcasting. Rieland serves on multiple committees and task forces related to his position at The Ohio State University.
Director of Operations, WOSU@COSI — Janice "Sheri" Walker
Sheri Walker graduated from Central High School, the new home for COSI. Although their mascot was a pirate, students from other area high schools referred to Central High students as "river rats." It's funny how the term "river rats" would be forgotten once Central met these schools on the football field for a football game. She is married with one son who resides in California and is involved in filmmaking. She has four brothers residing in Columbus; two of her brothers worked at WOSU. (Darrell Stewart who retired a few years ago, and Keith Stewart who worked here back in the sixties) Sheri has been employed at WOSU for 26 years, and audited The Stations in 1977 and 1978. Sheri was also employed as Senior Auditor in the OSU Internal Auditing department prior to coming to WOSU. She has served on many University committees; one of the most rewarding was the Presidential Search Committee in 1981, resulting in the 10th President of The University, Edward Jennings.
WOSU TV/WPBO.TV Station Manager — Ed Clay
Edwin R. Clay is Station Manager of WOSU TV. He received a B.S. Ed from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, an M.S. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and is a graduate of the CPB Management Program, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. His professional experience includes serving as Assistant Director of Community Services, Producer/Director, Local Programming, and Technical Director, Phil Donahue Show for WDTN-TV, Dayton, Ohio; Production Manager for WMUB/WOET-TV; Public Television/Radio Dayton/Oxford, Ohio; Producer, Special Projects for Nebraska Educational Television Network; and finally, Station Manager, Executive Producer, and Senior Producer, Special Projects (includes national production projects) for WOSU-TV/WPBO-TV. He has also worked extensively as a producer for projects such as: PBS NAACP Convention Live Coverage, TCS Sports Network, WCSU-FM and WMUB-FM, Prize Pieces Awards Ceremony, and the BlackBoard Book Awards. He was employed as an instructor at several colleges and universities including: Mass Communications, Miami University; Adjunct Instructor/Communications: Central State University, Ohio State University, and Wilberforce University; and Visiting Lecturer/ Ohio University, Howard University, Syracuse University, and Denison University. Over his years in the communications industry, Edwin has sat on many local boards and committees, including: the Central Educational Network, Program Executive Council, Board of Governors National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Ohio Valley, Ohio Public Broadcasting Statehouse News Bureau Oversight Committee, Public Television Service Convening, PBS Program Review Panel, Public Television Satellite Committee, CPB Multicultural Advisory Board; Public Television International Program Review Committee, National Black Programming Consortium, Board President, Columbus Film Association and CPB Program Fund Panel. Edwin has received multiple broadcast awards and honors including the National Academy of Television Arts and Science Regional Emmy Winner, Central Education Network Award for Excellence in Local Production, Prized Pieces International Film and Video Festival, CINE, PBS Promotion Award, Columbus International Film and Video Festival, Ohio Educational Broadcast Award, and the BPME Gold Medallion Award.
Radio Station Manager — Tim Eby
Tim Eby has been the Radio Manager for WOSU since June 2004. Prior to his move to Columbus, Eby was Station Manager at WVPE Public Radio in South Bend, Indiana, for more than 21 years. He has also served as the President of Public Radio In Mid-America (PRIMA), the country's largest public radio regional organization, for four years and has served on numerous task forces and panels sponsored by NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Eby has been a member of the Board of Directors of National Public Radio since November 2002, and currently serves as its Chairman. Throughout his career, Eby has worked on behalf of numerous arts, cultural, and non-profit groups in his local community, including a four-year stint as the volunteer chairman of the Elkhart Jazz Festival. He currently sits as a member of the board of directors for the Jazz Arts Group and the Thurber House in Columbus. Tim notes, however, that his greatest achievements are convincing his wife Kathi to marry him in 1988, and - with Kathi - raising three beautiful daughters: Kelci (born in 1992), McKenzie (born in 1995), and Lindsey (born in 1999). Tim and his family reside in Powell.
Director of Advancement — Doug Partusch
Director of Development — Mary K. Yerina
Mary K. Yerina has served as Director of Development for WOSU Public Media at The Ohio State University since May 2003. She is responsible for leading major and planned giving efforts, including the campaign to raise $5.6 million for the WOSU Digital Media Center at COSI Columbus. Prior to WOSU, Mary served as Associate Director of Development for the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, Sales Supervisor for the Columbus Region of Market Day, a fundraising food cooperative offered through schools, Sales Associate and Assistant Manager of Laura Ashley, and Provider Relations Representative at Prudential Insurance Company.
Since 2000, she has been a trustee of the Contemporary American Theater Company (CATCO). Her interest in theater and the arts were inspired by her sister, a former local actress, who recruited Mary to serve in a variety of roles behind the curtain as assistant stage manager and spotlight technician to front of the house as usher and house manager for numerous productions at CATCO, Players Junior Theater, Gallery Players, and Actors Summer Theater. Mary serves on the steering committee and is co-chairing the banquet for Sphinx Senior Honorary's 100th Anniversary at Ohio State in 2007. She also works as a holiday volunteer for Life Care Alliance’s Meals on Wheels.
Mary received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Summa Cum Laude from The Ohio State University in 1987. In addition to majoring in marketing and international business, she attended the Ecole Superieur de Commerce de Nantes in France as part of a Fisher College of Business exchange program. Mary received several scholarships and accolades throughout her academic career including one of twelve Outstanding Senior Awards in 1987. More recently, she received the Business First 40 Under 40 Award (2003) and graduated from Leadership Columbus (2005).
Director of Communications — Susan M. Meyer
Susan Meyer is Director of Communications for WOSU Public Media. She is responsible for the internal (www.wosu.org) and external web sites, public relations, organizational development, all customer service efforts, the member magazine Airfare, the WOSU Speakers Bureau, the WOSU Volunteers Program, the WOSU History Archives, and the stations’ graphic designers. She also works on special projects related to OSU. Susan serves as the Co-Chair for Habitat for Humanity’s Marketing and Communications board; as an advisor to the Chamber Music Columbus Board; on the Friends of the Library Board for the Columbus Metropolitan Library; and on the board of Ohioana Library. In 2005, Susan was chosen to participate in OSU's Leading Edge, a leadership development program. Susan received a Ph.D. in American Literature from OSU in 1999.
Director of Planning and Business Initiatives — David B. Carwile
A 25-year broadcasting veteran, David Carwile is Director of Planning and Business Initiatives as he serves as an Associate Director of WOSU Public Media. During the early 1980s, Dave worked as a statehouse reporter and Public Affairs Director for WCOL-AM/FM and as an assignment editor for WCMH-TV. He joined the WOSU Stations in 1986 and previously served as Director of Radio Programming and Radio Station Manager for WOSU-AM-FM. During his tenure as Program Director, the radio stations received a variety of awards, including numerous honors from the Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission and the prestigious Governor's Award for Media Support of the Arts from Ohio Arts Council. Professionally, Dave has served as President of the Ohio Public Radio group, the (National) Association of Music Personnel in Public Radio, and was among 100 leaders in Public Broadcasting invited to the White House for a reception marking the 25th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act. He has also served as a program evaluator and consultant for Public Radio International and the Public Radio Program Directors association, and as a member of National Public Radio’s Public Radio Conference Task Force. Away from the workplace, Dave is a member of the Rotary Club of Columbus, has been active in adult Scouting and has served on various committees for local arts organizations. For the past two decades he has also served as a volunteer staff member for The Ohio State University Marching Band and is the band's primary voice for concerts and football games. In 1999, Dave was selected to receive The Ohio State University Alumni Association's Josephine Sitterle Failer Award for Service to Students. Dave is a central Ohio native with an undergraduate degree (Summa Cum Laude) in broadcast education and a graduate degree in Human Resource Development, both from The Ohio State University. Dave lives in Worthington with his wife Kathleen and son James.
Director of Operations — Mary Alice Akins
Mary Alice - who is as Irish as you can get (“full-blooded and I have the temper to prove it!”) - was born in Xenia, OH, and survived the tornado of 1974. She has a B.A. from The Ohio State University in Criminology and Criminal Justice. Mary Alice has been married for 19 years to her husband, Kevin, who currently works for The Scotts Company. Something interesting about Mary Alice: she can crochet a baby blanket and could put in your hardwood floors if needed. Mary Alice comments, “I really do enjoy working at WOSU and I love the people I work with. It’s never the same boring thing every day; you never know what is going to happen on any given day and that’s what makes it interesting.”
Director of Content and Executive Producer — Brent Davis
Brent Davis is the senior content director for WOSU Public Media. He works with other staff members to create radio and TV programs and web material about Columbus and Central Ohio. He believes that it is vital that WOSU is recognized as a primary source for authentic, engaging, and informative content about this area. He joined WOSU in 2005 after 18 years at the University of Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio. He also worked as a broadcast producer at University Relations when he was in Alabama. He grew up in Missour-uh, as he pronounces it, and graduated from the University of Georgia. His first job out of school was reporting and then producing at a television station in Savannah. His wife, Susan, is from Rhode Island, another great place to visit. She works as an educator on the pulmonary floor at Children’s Hospital and spends a lot of her time playing with kids. She says it’s a great job. Zack, their son, is a Paraguayan by birth and a skateboarder by choice. They adopted him when he was six months old.
Director of Community Outreach and Development — Sharon Feinblatt
Sharon Feinblatt is the Director of Community Outreach and Development and works in concert with various staff members to build and sustain new external partnerships, most immediately the WOSU@COSI initiative. Sharon previously worked at the Fisher College of Business as the Director of Corporate and Graduate Relations. She also spent time at The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Wharton School of Business as well as the Division of Business Services. Sharon brings prior experience working within the corporate arena in public relations within the technology industry, having worked as Communications Manager with Altec Lansing Technologies, Inc. Sharon received her undergraduate degree from Penn State University in Public Relations (and is a very proud Nittany Lion!), her Masters of Science in Higher Education, and Doctorate in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Sharon is involved in the local Columbus community with the Steering Committee for the Celebration of Learning at the Columbus Public Library.
News Director — Mike Thompson
Mike Thompson was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and earned a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism from The Syracuse University and a Masters in Business Administration from an Ohio State University. He ran cross country and track at Syracuse University. Mike is married to Mary Cavanaugh Thompson. She is a full-time mom, part-time latchkey teacher, and freelance writer/editor. The Thompson’s have twins William and Madeleine, age 7.
Music Director — Beverley Ervine
Music Director Beverley Ervine was born and raised in Staunton, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Beverley earned her Bachelors degree in Music Education from East Carolina University and her Masters in Music History and Literature at The Ohio State University. In 1976 she was awarded an Aspen Music Festival bassoon scholarship to study with Leonard Sharrow, who played under Arturo Toscanini. Previous jobs include being a professional bassoonist, teacher (private students; elementary and high school band/music teacher; graduate teaching associate at Ohio State University), and audio/visual librarian and cataloguer at the Upper Arlington Library before joining the WOSU Radio family in 1986. In February of 1997, Beverley was elected President of the Association of Music Personnel in Public Radio (AMPPR), a national organization representing public radio stations that feature music as a regular part of their program schedule. During her tenure as President, a position she held for 5 of her 8 years on AMPPR's Board of Directors, she successfully initiated many new programs such as announcer training workshops and scholarships for first-time attendees to AMPPR's annual conference. Likewise, she increased visibility for the organization by launching AMPPR's web site and building relationships with other national and international radio organizations. Away from work Beverley enjoys spending time with her husband, FM’s Morning Show host Boyce Lancaster, whom she met and married at WOSU. They share a love of the Southwest and Native American culture, and hope to retire to Arizona someday. Also, Beverley is a long-time member of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra Artistic Committee where she reports on current classical music trends, repertoire, and rising young artists and composers. In June 2004, both Beverley and Boyce were recipients of The Marjorie L. Schwartz Golden Baton Awards from ProMusica for their contributions to the organization.
Manager of Human Resources — Dawn Ellicott
Dawn Ellicott M.A. PHR. is the Human Resource Manager at WOSU, where she joined the stations in 2003 as Human Resource Coordinator/ Student Involvement. Prior to joining the organization, she worked as an Employment Service Specialist at Columbus State Community College, where she also taught as an adjunct instructor. Dawn holds a Bachelors Degree from Franklin University in Employee Assistance Counseling, a Master’s Degree from The Ohio State University in Educational Policy and Leadership, and is a Certified Professional in Human Resources. She also serves the larger university as a part of the Sexual Harassment Speakers Group. Dawn is currently pursuing a PH. D. from The Ohio State University’s College of Education. She has three children David, Jessica, and Jonathan and enjoys walking, gardening, and visiting at senior citizen living facilities in her time away from work.
Director of Educational Services — Marcelita G. Haskins
Marcelita G. Haskins has over 25 years of experience developing and delivering services in education and outreach through public broadcasting. As the Director of Educational Services for WOSU Public Media, she oversees early childhood education services including workshops for center-based and home child care providers focusing on strategies to promote school readiness; the development of multimedia projects for integration into in K-12 curricula; and outreach projects that advance WOSU Public Media’s educational mission. Marcelita was born and raised in the Philippines. She holds a baccalaureate degree from the University of the Philippines, a Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. in communication from The Ohio State University. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Literacy Network.
